The pre-clerkship phase of the TUSM curriculum uses interactive lectures and other forms of active learning (flipped classrooms, small groups, team-based learning, case-base problem solving) to fully engage students in the educational process.

Teaching opportunities during the TUSM MMC Maine Track Second Year curriculum include the following organ systems: Neurosciences, Intro Clinical Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, Reproductive, Hematology Oncology, Endocrinology, and Dermatology, in addition to anatomy, pharmacology, pathology, ethics and professionalism, and clinical reasoning.

CME credits are available for many UME educational teaching opportunities.

Leadership

Jennifer Hayman, MD

Dr. Hayman is a Pediatric Hospitalist at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center where, in addition to active inpatient clinical service, she is involved medical education leadership, medical group and hospital leadership, and participates in advocacy work to prevent unsafe sleep related infant deaths in Maine.

Dr. Hayman is the Director of Curriculum for the Tufts University School of Medicine-Maine Track. She has received “Excellence in Teaching” and “Notable” teaching awards from TUSM, and special citations for her Grand Rounds Presentations. She also received the “Outstanding Pediatrician of the Year” award from the Pediatric Residency Program at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.  She sits on the Board of Trustees for Maine Health Medical Group, where she participates in in promoting physician leadership and academic integration across the health system.

Dr. Hayman has been an advocate for infant safe sleep since 2008, during which time she has provided educational and training sessions state-wide on the subject of teaching safe sleep practices to newborn and infant care providers.  Dr. Hayman also participates in the statewide multidisciplinary Safe Sleep Task Force and the Maine CDC’s Maternal, Infant and Fetal Mortality Review Panel. Maine Children’s Trust awarded her their “Professional Advocate of the Year” award in 2011, and awarded the BBCH the “Business Collaborator of the Year” Award in 2014, for partnering on Safe Sleep advocacy in Maine.  Dr. Hayman founded the Cribs for Kids, Maine Chapter, to increase access to safe sleep environments to all Maine families. She has presented at conferences in Maine and nationally on infant safe sleep, and has publications on clinical, medical education, and infant safe sleep topics.
