Dr. Hipkens was born and raised in New York City (but has always loved Maine!). She started her career as an assistant canvass director for a foreign policy non-profit. Her interest in advocacy and health equity led Dr. Hipkens to pursue a career in medicine. She attended medical school at Columbia University and trained in family medicine at the Mount Sinai/Beth Israel residency program. She joined the faculty at the Mount Sinai/Beth Israel FM residency program and remained for six years where her main roles included co-chair of the addiction QI committee, prenatal coordinator and diabetes site champion. She worked for one year at a healthy, equity-focused start up called Cityblock. In 2021-2022 Dr. Hipkens and her family relocated to Maine where she completed an addiction medicine fellowship at Maine Medical Center. She is now the associate program director for the addiction medicine fellowship and will be involved in the opening of our new Maine Health Comprehensive Addiction Medicine (CAM) Program in the fall.
